ORVIETO

Orvieto is a city that dates back to Etruscan times located to the south in the Terni Province of Umbria at the border of the Viterbo province in Lazio.

The city was built on a mountain of tuff at 325 meters above sea level and dominates the valley below, where the Paglia and Chiani rivers flow just before they pour into the Tiber River that then leads all the way to Rome. This huge, brown, volcanic tuff platform, which rises up between 20 and 50 meters from the valley floor, was formed by the eruption of several volcanoes which left behind this enormous mass of material.
