Culture, art and nature: top itineraries to discover Lake Trasimeno in a weekend

Are you planning to visit Lake Trasimeno in 48 hours? Let’s discover together what to see around Lake Trasimeno

If you are going to have a weekend in Umbria, Lake Trasimeno is actually the best starting point to discover breath-taking landscapes and charming medieval hamlets in Umbria

Lake Trasimeno is located in a geographically strategic position from where it is easy to reach charming historical villages in Umbria such as Castiglione del Lago, Magione, Assisi, Passignano, Città della Pieve. And that’s not all!

The Unesco site Val d’Orcia is only a few km away from Lake Trasimeno, which is located on the borders between Umbria and Tuscany. Pienza, Bagno Vignoni, San Quirico d’Orcia are the most renown hamlets part of this breath-taking site, the symbol of Tuscany all over the world with its green cypresses and infinite and uncontaminated valleys.

Moreover, borders among Tuscany and Umbria are a land full of thermal sites with natural hot springs: Chianciano Terme, Bagni San Filippo, San Casciano dei Bagni are perfect destinations to have nice moments of relaxation.

What to see at Lake Trasimeno: Castiglione del Lago

First of attraction is of course the medieval hamlet of Castiglione del Lago, located on the top of the hill behind Lake Trasimeno and overlooking it.

Streets and alleys of the historical centre are dotted with artisans shops and souvenir stores more than restaurants, taverns and inns where to discover the typical Umbrian tastes, from wines to charcuterie and cheeses.

The “Rocca del Leone”

The Medieval Rocca, also known as Rocca del Leone, is a charming fortress dominating the Lake Trasimeno and the historical centre of Castiglione del Lago: it has been representing for ages one of the most important military presidium of Central Italy.

To get to the Rocca you have to enter the Palazzo della Corgna, walking down its frescoed halls and through its crenellated walls.

From the Rocca, the view is breathtaking: you can enjoy the sight of the entire Lake at 360° and its islands too: Maggiore island, Polvese Island and Minore island.

The best moment to admire the panorama is, of course, the sunset hour, when the sun goes down on the Lake and every visible town turns its lights on, for a unique view and a magic atmosphere.

What to visit in Magione

Magione is a tiny hamlet in the province of Perugia, best known for the sunsets which can be admired from its lake shore.

Imagine to be seated on the shore of Lake Trasimeno, sipping a glass of Umbrian wine, looking at the sun going down on the lake and its islands: is there anything more romantic?

Inside the walls of the medieval hamlet of Magione there are also places worth to visit. The most important is the Castle of Knights of Malta, built in the XII century and historically used as a hospital to host pilgrims walking to Rome or Jerusalem.

The castle offers guided tours and tastings through history and tastes of Umbria, a nice stop for those who want to discover Umbrian Middle Age constructions.

What to visit in Città della Pieve

Città della Pieve is certainly the most renown hamlet in the province of Perugia; it is located on a hill and it overlooks valleys and hills, across the borders among Umbria and Tuscany.

Città della Pieve is worth a visit: a charming Medieval hamlet with a great past and an important cultural heritage: Città della Pieve is the birthplace of Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino, master of the famous artist Raffaello Sanzio.

Nowadays, some of its artworks are still shown in Città della Pieve churches and museums.

Walking down the alleys of the hamlet you will discover many magic corners and, if you are on a romantic weekend, we suggest to pass through one of the most suggestive alleys of Italy, the Vicolo Baciadonne (“Kissing-Women Alley”), so called because it is really narrow (it is 56/60 cm large) and in some way it is not possible to avoid kissing your partner while crossing it!
